"II can't."
Josie's face fell. "Why not? You said you didn't believe in love, but I can see now that you do. There's nothing stopping you from having a wonderful relationship for the rest of your life. Nothing but your own fears and wrongful beliefs. Tell me what they are and I'll help you. I just want you to be happy. As happy as I was."
D.J. stared at Josie, seeing the true concern on the angel's face. Before last night, she'd never told anyone her innermost fears. But now that she'd told McCall, she couldn't see how it would hurt to tell her angel the truth. "You said you knew everything about me. Then you know about my mother dying and my father" D.J. broke off with a sigh, then stared off into the woods once more. This was harder than she'd thought.
Josie touched her arm in encouragement. "I know he hurt you. That he wasn't there for you. I'm sorry. I wish I could have done something to heal him before he hurt you so badly."
D.J. shook her head, then swallowed the unaccustomed emotion clogging her throat. "The only thing he wanted was to have her back. Since that wasn't possible . . ."
She shrugged. "After my mother died he was just the body of a man performing everyday tasks without caring about anyone or anything. I can't live the way he did, waiting to die so I can be with the one I love." D.J. looked up, then away from Josie's tear-filled gaze. "I just can't."
Silence hung between them for several moments.
